"Que tan lejos"

Tania Hermida's "Que tan lejos" was a dramatic film with a plot in which two unfamiliar women attempt to travel a significant distance between Quito and Cuenca.
Personally, I enjoyed the slow pace of this movie. The driving action behind the plot was not elevated by gun fights, mass homicides, or grotesque mutilations of other characters. Rather, "Que tan lejos" gained momentum from the realness of the difficult situations of the main characters, Esperanza and Tristeza.
While watching this movie, I found myself sympathizing with Tristeza's situation in which she battled a personal deadline to reach "that one other person" in time. Although I have not been in the same exact situation as this character, I felt it was extremely easy to relate to the feelings of despair, haste, heartache, and anguish.
One thing that made a significant impact on me was the manner in which Tristeza maintained her composure throughout her journey. At first, I wondered if the actress was not experienced at displaying emotions, because I could not understand how this character could seem so calm in spite of the urgency of her circumstance. But then, I realized that the actress was perfect, and that her performance was a very good portrayal of "Sadness." I think that when in that same situation, everyone's emotional displacement would vary, but it was true to human nature that Tristeza held her composure in the face of heartache and pain. I think that is something to be admired.
I enjoyed "Que tan lejos," and I appreciated the relaxed plot of this film. I believe it is exactly this unperturbed format that made the actions and the experiences of the characters that much more relatable.
