I thought that the Monday Night Movie was very interesting, yet disturbing. The torture tactics throughout the movie were very disturbing and cruel, and I find it absolutely amazing and absurd that these torture tactics have been/are used in other countries/eras. I watched Goya's Ghost in my AP Spanish class in high school, as well. I thought that the movie was enjoyable and interesting, but I don't really like the torturous acts throughout the film.

I enjoyed the parts in the film about the artist, Goya, especially the ways in which he painted royalty, for example, he made the queen even uglier than she really was in person. I thought that this was very humorous.

A line in the movie that stands out to me was when Goya was talking about being deaf, and how he thanks God everyday for keeping his sight, because painting is his passion, and he doesn't need his hearing as much as he needs his sight. He is grateful for what he still has, and does not whine about what he doesn't have anymore.

Overall, I felt that the movie was very interesting and showed great insight on the culture of that time period/place.

Goya’s Ghost was a very interesting movie because it allowed the viewer to have a glimpse of the destruction and corruption that a too powerful institution can have. Also, the film showed the murders and chaos during the Spanish civil war. When Inés is called to the church to talk about her alleged Jewish tradition practice, she is kept in the church prison for nearly seventeen years. This shows the terrible corruption and extensive power that the church had over the country of Spain because she was never given a trial, Inés was just ‘put to the question,’ meaning she was tortured into saying whatever the church accused her of. It upset me that the church never had to answer to anyone, they didn’t tell the family what was going on, and they certainly didn’t have to tell any sort of government authority what they were doing to innocent people. I think the abuse is terrible that some institutions and people had gotten away with in the past.
I also think that it is disturbing that Lorenzo was willing to have his daughter, along with all the other prostitutes in her group be arrested because he was a powerful man in Spain due to Napoleons reign and didn’t want people to find out that he had used Inés and they had a daughter who went down a troubled path.
However, I think the end scene was very powerful when Lorenzo’s body was on the cart after the execution and the children were singing and dancing around him, Inés was just holding his hand carrying the abandoned baby. I think this scene shows that powerful people fall from power and also bring down innocent people with them. Inés was an innocent young woman until the church and Lorenzo got their hands on her, and the last scene of the film truly shows how Inés had lost her senses.
Goya’s Ghost was a very powerful film and exemplified the brutally corrupt organizations’ hold on innocent people. Also, the film showed that people can rise out of the oppressive world that they were thrown into, this is shown through Alicia, who ran away from the convent and became a prostitute and later she was in a relationship with a powerful Portuguese leader who helped take over Spain. For some, Alicia’s part in the film may be sad, the fact that she was living a life outside of the norm saddens some, but she was choosing her own destiny and I think that is what the film is all about. Inés was never able to chose her own destiny because she was in prison, Goya could not chose because he needed work and would paint for nearly anyone, Lorenzo was banished from the church and forced into exile and had to find something to do with his life or he would starve. All three of these major characters suffered under the oppression of the time period, except Alicia who was able to decide her own path, even if it was the path least trodden on. Goya’s Ghost was a very interesting and provocative film that made the viewer question authority, empathize with the sufferers of the Spanish civil war, and wish that some people had a better opportunity in their lives to make their own destiny.
